What's New
Khamarunga Banda
It is with deep sadness and shock that the ENERGIA network has responded to the passing away of Khamarunga Banda, ENERGIA member and friend. Khamarunga passed away on December 8, after months of battling bone cancer. She was in hospital in Johannesburg, South Africa. A memorial service was conducted at the Calgary Methodist Church, on Saturday, 12 December 2009 and she has been put to rest in her home country of Zambia on December 15.
Khamarunga will be remembered for her tireless efforts to improve the lives of poor women through increased access to energy. Within the ENERGIA network, she was an inspiration and a driving force for exploring new areas of the linkages between gender & climate change, and gender & biofuels. Khamarunga will be missed, not only for the gap she is leaving behind professionally, but also as a person. She was a good friend to many, who remember her enthousiasm, her joy and her beautiful smile. May you rest in peace, Khamarunga.

Biofuels for Sustainable Rural Development and Empowerment of Women: Case Studies from Africa and Asia
ENERGIA and IUCN, 2009 (Editors: Gail Karlsson and Khamarunga Banda)
This book of case studies represents a collaborative effort to explore the potential of biofuels to provide sustainable livelihoods and local sources of energy for people in rural areas of developing countries, with a special emphasis on women. Although there are many forms of bio-energy that can be useful in this regard, our focus in this book is on plant products, mostly seeds, used to produce oil - which is then either utilized directly in engines or equipment, or processed into biodiesel.
The pre-print version is now available for download here.
