Junior/Medior Research Assistant to support the ENERGIA Gender and Energy Research Programme

Background

ENERGIA is an international network of like-minded organisations and professionals, active in 18 countries in Asia and Africa. ENERGIA is hosted by Hivos, based in The Hague, The Netherlands. The ENERGIA Gender and Energy Research Programme is providing the evidence base for improving the effectiveness of energy investment by understanding and addressing women’s needs for modern energy services through empirical research. The research programme produces both robust empirical evidence and messages for policy and practice. ENERGIA’s Research Programme is funded by the UK Department for International Development (DFID). In 2018, the research findings will be presented both as reports of the research teams that have performed the empirical data collection and analysis on different research areas within the field of gender and energy, and also synthesis and overview reports will be developed.

Consultancy

The consultancy is for the support to the ENERGIA team and the Principal Investigator of the research programme for the synthesis and overview reports by providing a first level analysis, and the support to a number of synthesis and overview events.

The programme assistant will report to the Principle Investigator and to the Programme Manager of the Gender and Energy Research Programme.

Scope of Work

  • Providing first level synthesis analysis of research reports from the Gender and Energy Research Programme through coding of research reports and papers (e.g. in Zotero, QSR)

  • Developing overviews of data and effective representation of data and findings such as in tables and graphs, summary presentations

  • Development of a database of top priority documents on gender and energy by selecting and coding documents, with a view to developing a bibliography or briefing paper based on the database

  • Support PI/ENERGIA in organisation of events and webinars (DSA conference 28 June), webinars (provisional dates 25 and 27 June) and ENERGIA’s input into HLPF (July)

  • Support PI in development of synthesis report and annual meeting

These tasks will be performed in collaboration and consultations with the Principal Investigator, the management team of the research programme, the ENERGIA team, and will involve interaction with researchers and stakeholders.

Qualifications

  • MSc or PhD level experience with qualitative data analysis

  • Research background in one or more of the content areas is preferred (energy access, gender, energy policy)

  • Experience with organisation of webinars and events

  • Excellent communication skills in English, both written and spoken

  • Available to invest a concentrated effort in the period June-August

Duration

This will be a six month consultancy assignment from 1 June – 30 November 2018 for 2 or 2.5 days per week.
