Analysis

Analysis includes synthesis and review of existing literature, and case study research aimed at further deepening the understanding of the energy, gender and sustainable development linkage. This strategy will be carried out with a view to improving project, programme and policy design.

In 2005 work the activities under the Analysis Strategy centred around implementing a project entitled "Gender as a Key Variable in Energy Interventions in Developing Countries: Are We Asking the Right Questions?". The project aimed to move towards an analytical framework for understanding and measuring linkages among gender, poverty and energy, that would be credible in both gender/poverty and energy terms, by addressing two specific research questions about linkages between gender, poverty and energy:

  • Do gender relations constitute a key variable in determining the impact of energy policy, programs and projects?
  • How can energy interventions most effectively contribute to the process of empowering women?

Three activities are planned under this strategy:

  1. Preparation of thematic synthesis and literature/policy review

  2. Production of case studies

  3. Development of indicators, tools, and guidelines for gender assessment

There will be an explicit capability-building research element in all these activities and, where possible, these outputs will be developed through existing Southern research institutions and networks.
