ISES/ENERGIA Workshop at:
ISES Solar World Congress “Solar Means Business”, 24 - 30 August 1997, Taejon, Korea

The biennial ‘Solar World Congresses’ of the International Solar Energy Society are perhaps the best known global events in the field of renewable energy. Following an informal meeting of women at the last congress in Harare, Zimbabwe in 1995, this year's congress in Korea will include a workshop on ‘Women and Energy’ within the main program of the congress. This will give an opportunity to chart the development of the ENERGIA network, as well as to discuss issues of gender and energy. Chaired by architect professor Anne-Grete Hestnes (Norway), herself a director of the International Solar Energy Society, the workshop should also be an opportunity to build strong links between ENERGIA and ISES. It is also hoped that the Workshop will include a briefing on the ENERGIA World Wide Web Site which is being developed through the ISES WIRE (World Information on Renewable Energy) programme - part of the World Solar Summit Process.
For information on the Congress and the Workshop contact:

Commonwealth Science Council Travel Grants
Travel grants are available from the Commonwealth Science Council to help scientists from member countries to attend international conferences, major meetings and short technical in-service training. Emphasis is given to activities which support CSC flagship programmes: one of these is energy.
The programme is growing rapidly, and priority is given to applications from women scientists and from small states. In 1995/96, the budget was £35 000 and 8 out of 29 travel grants awarded went to women; in 1996/97, the budget was £70 000 and 23 of the 70 grants awarded went to women; for 1997/98, the budget is £100 000. Fellowships for 1-3 month attachments to scientific institutions in developing countries can also be supported from these funds. These have been less popular with women, probably because women cannot get away from home for these longer periods.
