Workshop on Women and Sustainable Energy Networking in Africa
ENERGIA is currently planning a Workshop on Women and Sustainable Energy Networking in Africa, to be held in Africa in 1998.
As a decentralised network, a major strategy of ENERGIA is to encourage and support the development of regional networks on women and sustainable energy by regional organisations: Africa is a priority region. ENERGIA is in close contact with various initiatives indicating widespread interest in gender and energy in the region at present, e.g. Africa Energy Programme training workshops for women energy planners, Southern African Household Energy Network, ISES Women's Forum, etc. So development of a regional network seems timely.
In addition, ENERGIA has identified generally the lack of case studies on women and sustainable energy as an obstacle to better energy planning incorporating gender. The workshop could also generate such case studies, that can be disseminated in ENERGIA News. Another aim is to increase Southern participation in ENERGIA News through establishing relationships with partner organisations and Southern consulting editors.
The objectives of the workshop are:
- To catalyse the establishment of a network on women and sustainable energy in Africa, in keeping with ENERGIA's strategy of regionalisation.
- To generate case studies on women and sustainable energy in Africa, with a view to possible publication as a book and/or dissemination through ENERGIA News.
- To identify partner organisations and consulting editors as part of the Southernisation of ENERGIA News.
About 20 participants will be drawn from (1) African energy networks interested in gender and (2) African programmes, field projects and action researchers who will present case studies on approaches to gender and energy. If you fit in one of these categories and are interested in participating in the workshop, please write to any member of the ENERGIA Editorial Board, explaining your interest or case study.
