New design and logo for ENERGIA
After working with the old design and logo for more than 13 years, we felt it was time to change and to create a more modern style that better represents today's ENERGIA Network and its activities. Especially the logo was no longer reflecting the very essential switch that ENERGIA has made from 'women and energy' to 'gender and energy'. We are almost at the end of the selection process for the logo, in which the entire network and our Advisory Group were involved. The change in logo is going hand-in-hand with the redesign of ENERGIA News, the website and ENERGIANet. You will therefore find the next issue of ENERGIA's electronic newsletter in a new style.
ENERGIA Advisory Group 2009 - 2011
ENERGIA is pleased to announce its new Advisory Group (AG) that will serve a term from 2009 – 2011. The AG includes new members but also members of the previous AG to allow for continuity. The members represent expertise in gender and energy from Africa and Asia, but also expertise outside the network from leading energy and development organisations. The new AG consists of:
- Dr Wendy J Annecke, Global Village Energy Partnership, South Africa
- Dr Venkata Ramana Putti, World Bank-Washington, USA
- Dr Rose Mensah-Kutin, ABANTU for Development, Ghana
- Professor Semida Silveira, KTH Royal Institute of Technology, Sweden
- Ms Priyanthi Fernando, Centre for Poverty Analysis (CEPA), Sri Lanka
- Mr Sécou Sarr, Enda Third World (Enda Tiers Monde), Senegal
- Ms Elizabeth Cecelski, Energy Environment and Development, USA
The network is confident that the new AG will continue to provide a vision on future directions as well as a sound reflection on the relevance of its actions.
ENERGIA Book of Biofuels Case Studies at CSD 17
In collaboration with IUCN, ENERGIA is developing a book of biofuels case studies from Africa and Asia, which addresses the lead question: 'How can the positions of poor women - as well as men - in broader biofuel value chains be strengthened?'. The book will be presented at the 17th session of the UN Commission for Sustainable Development (CSD 17) in New York, where ENERGIA and IUCN will also organise a learning event on 'Evaluating the Role of Biofuels in Sustainable Rural Development', with active participation of a number of ENERGIA members.
Mainstreaming Gender in Energy Projects
In May 2008, ENERGIA published a call for the submission of project proposals to mainstream gender approaches into existing energy projects. Several proposals were received, out of which seven were shortlisted: from Pakistan, the Philippines, Kenya, Senegal, Botswana, Tanzania and Sri Lanka. Once we have completed contract negotiations with all the intended project partners, we expect to give more details on the projects. Please check our website regularly for updates.
MoU with Women Environmental Development Organisation (WEDO)
Within the context of their actions for the Global Gender and Climate Alliance (GGCA), WEDO and ENERGIA will jointly organise an advocacy team for 2009, targeting the four major UNFCCC meetings (March 29-April 9, Bonn; June 1-12, Bonn; Sept. 28-Oct. 8, Bangkok; Dec. 7-18, COP, Copenhagen). ENERGIA and WEDO will help to develop the GGCA advocacy strategy to enable it to submit gender text to negotiating bodies and documents, support existing text, hold side events during the meetings, sustain communication with key Parties throughout the year and, along with other GGCA members, engage the UNFCCC Secretariat.
Collaboration between ENERGIA News and Boiling Point
Given the many linkages between ENERGIA and HEDON, ENERGIA will contribute to a forthcoming edition of Boiling Point. The focus of the edition will be on household dynamics, which can be described as issues that affect household energy and the responses of households to interventions. These issues include gender, migration (transient and permanent), income and social/livelihood security, cultural perceptions, livelihood strategies etc. In this edition of Boiling Point we will be looking at how some of these factors can shape household energy interventions and responses.
ENERGIA would very much welcoming contributions to this special edition from our subscribers to ENERGIA News. The deadline for submitting articles is 15 May 2009. Guidelines for articles are available through the HEDON website.

ENERGIA Africa and Asia Regional Network Meeting Reports for download
In November and December 2008 ENERGIA's two regional networks in Asia and Africa both held a meeting, where national members met with the coordinators at regional and international level to share, learn and strategise. The reports of both meetings are available for download here.
Gender Audits of Energy Policy and Ministry
In previous issues of ENERGIANet, we informed you that Friends of the Environment (FOTE) was performing a gender audit of the national energy policy of the Energy Commission of Nigeria (ECN). The national team is now working with Technical Adviser, May Sengendo, to finalise the report with the ultimate goal that the report, its recommendations and the action plan will be endorsed by ECN.
In 2009, ENERGIA plans to implement further gender audits in:
- Ghana, to be led by the GRATIS Foundation in close collaboration with the Ministry of Energy (MoEN).
- Nepal, to be led by a consortium of the Centre for Rural Technology and Practical Action Nepal, in collaboration with the Alternative Energy Promotion Centre.
- Pakistan, to be led by GTZ Pakistan, in collaboration with the Alternative Energy Development Board and the Ministry of Women Development.
Coaching energy projects on how to mainstreaming gender
Through coaching, ENERGIA has been working intensively with these energy projects in order to set gender goals beyond those addressing the basic needs for clean cooking fuels and lighting: that is, to address productive needs. In this respect, the Energy Forum of Sri Lanka has been working closely with the Electricity Consumer Societies of two micro-hydro plants to develop business plans to promote income generation for women. Similarly, TIDE in India and NANEGE in Sri Lanka are working on promoting 'non-traditional' roles for village women in the operation and management of their micro-hydro schemes. The biogas programmes in Lao and Nepal aim to see women involved in the contracting, marketing and installation of biogas plants.
