New Initiatives

Asia-Pacific Access to Energy for the Poor
The Foundation for Development Cooperation (FDC) has been tasked by the Asian Development Bank to design an Asia-Pacific Regional Initiative - Access to Energy for the Poor to increase access to modern forms of energy by the one billion people in the region who do not currently benefit from such access.
Between August and November 2008, FDC will lead the design of this new initiative. The initiative is envisaged to be as inclusive and partner-driven as possible, with strong private sector contributions, in order to achieve the greatest impact. More >>

News from the Secretariat

Welcome to our new Africa Regional Network Coordinator and Secretariat
We are pleased to introduce BOTEC, the Botswana Technology Centre, as the new Africa Regional Secretariat (RS), and Ms Nozipho Wright as the Africa Regional Network Coordinator (RNC), after May Sengendo stepped down earlier this year as ENERGIA's RNC for the region. Nozipho has been an active chair of GENBO (Gender and Energy Network Botswana) and, in this capacity, was involved in the very first gender audit of national energy policy in Botswana. She also participated in the advocacy efforts at CSD15 as part of the Botswana delegation. BOTEC is very supportive of GENBO's gender and energy activities and has shown great interest in hosting the ENERGIA Africa RS. Read the interview with Nozipho in the latest issue of ENERGIA News >>

Memorandum of Understanding between ENERGIA and IUCN
ENERGIA has recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). The MoU expresses the intention to identify and carry out specific joint projects and activities. These projects will mostly be in the field of gender and energy, and related to issues such as climate change and biofuels. With the entire network's full support for this joint collaboration with IUCN, this new strategic partnership provides an excellent opportunity for both organisations, and ENERGIA is looking forward to a fruitful and close collaboration.   • ESMAP expert meeting on gender horizon-scanning and mainstreaming gender in energy
    May 2008, Washington DC, USA
    ENERGIA contribution: Sharing experiences concerning ENERGIA's global, regional and national partnerships, and presenting approaches to capacity building and gender audits that were used in TIE-ENERGIA
  • DfID-PISCES First Consortium Advisory Group Meeting
    June 2008, Dar es Salaam, Tanzania
    Policy Innovation Systems for Clean Energy Security (PISCES) is a five year initiative, working in partnership in Kenya, India, Sri Lanka and Tanzania, and funded by the U.K's Department for International Development (DFID). The purpose of PISCES is to develop new knowledge and policies promoting energy access and livelihoods through bioenergy. Sheila sits in the Advisory Group and attended this meeting. More >>
  • IUCN World Conservation Congress
    October 2008, Barcelona, Spain
    This congress marked the official launch of the Memorandum of Understanding between IUCN and ENERGIA [see above].

Network News

High Level Regional Policy Meeting on Networking towards Gender and Poverty Sensitive Energy Policies
3-4 November 2008 in Bangkok, Thailand
ENERGIA-Asia and UNESCAP together organise this meeting to discuss and develop the framework and initial action plan of a regional Policy Innovation Forum (PIF) on Gender, Poverty and Energy, and to formally launch the PIF. Preceding the meeting, an e-discussion took place among 'prime movers' within the region who are a part of or are closely linked to national energy policy formulation and planning. Discussion papers on key themes were prepared by leading energy, poverty and gender experts, capturing the main conclusions and recommendations emerging from the e-discussion. More >>

ENERGIA Regional Network Meetings
From 5-7 November 2008 the ENERGIA Asia Network meets in Bangkok, Thailand, while the ENERGIA Africa Network meets from 9-11 December in Gabarone, Botswana. Representatives from National Focal Points, Regional Secretariats, the International Secretariat and the Regional Network Coordinator meet to share knowledge and information, and to strategise for the years to come.

Gender audit of national energy policy in India
ENERGIA is pleased to report that the gender audit of national energy policy in India has been successfully concluded. The audit was implemented by IRADe, ENERGIA's National Focal Point in India, and specifically looked at the national policy of the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy. A major achievement was the endorsement of the audit's final report by the Ministry. More >>

Gender audit of energy policy in Nigeria
Friends of the Environment (FOTE), ENERGIA's National Focal Point in Nigeria, is currently carrying out the gender audit of national Nigerian Energy Policy:

  • to identify gender gaps in energy-related policies, and formulate strategies that can address those gaps; and
  • to make gender and energy issues visible to wide audiences in ways that support the national and international networking and advocacy initiatives to influence energy policies and programmes.

National training workshops in Asia and Africa
In the period from September to December 2008, a number of national training workshops are being held in Nepal, India, Indonesia, Lao PDR and Sri Lanka. These build on the Asia Regional Training of Trainers workshop held in Chiang Mai, Thailand, in October 2007. The national training workshops will mostly target programme and project managers and explain how to mainstream gender approaches in their programmes and projects.
In Africa, a start will be made with the gender and energy capacity building efforts at national level in November and December. These activities will continue in 2009. The national training workshops that will be organised in Africa build on those given under the TIE-ENERGIA programme.
