MDG3 Fund: Investing in Equality
Concrete action is called for to achieve equality between women and men. As a result Dutch NGOs, companies and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs have decided to put their back into this fund to contribute to the realisation of Millennium Development Goal 3.
The total budget of the fund is € 50 million, available for multi-year proposals. There will be one call for proposals. Applications are to be submitted from 15 March 2008 up to and including 14 May 2008. More >>

With pleasure I am introducing myself as the new Secretary at the ENERGIA International Secretariat. I am taking over from Odile Beckers who has accepted a new position within the ETC Foundation. ENERGIA Operational Guidelines and Constitution
ENERGIA is happy to announce that its Operational Guidelines and Constitution have been approved and are now operable. The documents have been developed with inputs from the Advisory Group and ENERGIA's National Focal Points to improve transparency and enhance communication and support to our partners.

ENERGIA presentation on biofuels at WIREC side event
Washington International Renewable Energy Congress (WIREC 2008), 7 March 2008, Washington DC
The Stockholm Environment Institute (SEI) invited ENERGIA to present a paper on gender and biofuels at their side event 'North-South-South Forum on Biofuels, Climate and Sustainable Development' at WIREC. ENERGIA was represented by Gail Karlsson, who presented the paper 'Engaging Women in Small-scale Production of Biofuels for Rural Energy'.

News from Asia

Meetings with key stakeholders in India, Nepal and Sri Lanka
Sheila Oparaocha and Ana Rojas from the International Secretariat and Soma Dutta, the Asia Regional Network Coordinator, visited the Nepal, Indian and Sri Lankan networks in January 2008. Meetings with national focal points (NFP) and other key stakeholders facilitated a profiling of ENERGIA's activities, inducing further collaboration with these stakeholders, both nationally and internationally.

Gender audit dissemination workshop in India
A gender audit of energy policies is being carried out in India by the national NFP IRADe (Integrated Research and Action for Development). An in-depth analysis of energy planning, policy making and poverty reduction approaches is carried out to identify gender gaps in energy policies. A workshop to disseminate the key findings and results of the gender audit exercise was held on 17 January 2008 and was attended by key stakeholders in the energy sector, including the Planning Commission, the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, Government of India, senior officials from various ministries, civil society groups, feminist economists, and gender specialists.

Seed funding activities
Seed funding has been approved for activities in eight countries in Asia: Bangladesh, India, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Nepal, Philippines, Sri Lanka and Vietnam. The activities supported by the seed funds are: e-discussion in India on gender, energy and poverty in the context of the Integrated Energy Policy of the government, followed by field level pilot testing of the suggestions; development of a national gender profile in energy sector in Lao PDR; a student support programme facilitating research and analysis on gender and energy issues in Nepal; a collaborative research study on impact assessment of energy technologies in empowering women in Sri Lanka; and conduction of training courses for local motivators on gender mainstreaming in energy development programmes in Vietnam.

Farewell to May Sengendo as Africa RNC
ENERGIA is saying farewell to May Sengendo who decided to step down in 2007 as the Africa Regional Network Coordinator (RNC). ENERGIA would like to express sincere thanks to May Sengendo for her enthousiasm and the good work she has done for the Africa Network in Phase 3 and the TIE-ENERGIA programme. We are happy to inform you that May will continue to be involved in ENERGIA's work and will remain the main contact person for the Uganda National Gender and Energy Network.

Selection of a new Africa Regional Secretariat
The process of selecting a new Africa Regional Secretariat (RS) and RNC is now in full swing. The International Secretariat received a number of Expressions of Interest upon the call that was sent to all African ENERGIA NFPs. A selection committee is now reviewing the expressions and the new Africa RS and RNC are expected to be announced by the end of March 2008.

National policy influencing and seed funding for network building
Earlier this year, the International Secretariat sent a call for seed funding proposals to the Africa ENERGIA Network for national network building activities and also a call for policy influencing at national level. Proposals have been received for both calls and are now under review. The selection of the proposals which qualify for funding will be announced in April 2008.
