News from Asia
- CRT-Nepal New Regional Secretariat in Asia: The Centre for Rural Technology has been selected to host the ENERGIA Asia Regional Secretariat (RS) for the period 2007-2010. The RS will be primarily responsible for logistical and administrative support to the implementation of the workplan. Dr. Indira Shakya will be the contact person within CRT-Nepal for the RS.
- IRADe New National Focal Point India: During the ENERGIA India National Stakeholder Consultation in May 2007, Integrated Research and Action for Development (IRADe) has been selected as ENERGIA's new National Focal Point for India. The consultation furthermore provided an opportunity to identify and review gender and energy programs in India through active engagement with stakeholders. The participants found it was an enriching experience to have people sharing their experiences in the field and discussing how to scale up the activities and other policy issues for gender and energy.
- Philippines and India selected for Gender Audits in Asia: As part of the Policy Influencing strategy of ENERGIA, gender audits have planned in Asia, started with two countries in 2007. Following a call for proposals Approtech Asia, Philippines, and the IRADe, India, have been selected to conduct gender audits of national energy policy. Dr Govind Kelkar has been identified as the lead technical expert who will provide overall guidance and technical backstopping to the national teams.
Formal completion of TIE-ENERGIA
With the final reporting to the European Commission in September 2007, the TIE ENERGIA project has formally come to an end. The ENERGIA consortium (ETC, EAETDN, Eco and KuSiNi) are of the opinion that the project has been a great success. The most important key outputs are: Gender and Energy training packages; Training of Trainers in East, West and Southern Africa; National Training Workshops; Gender Audits carried out in Botswana, Kenya and Senegal and global dissemination of materials.
Impacts from TIE-ENERGIA:
- Enhanced resources and capabilities to mainstream gender into energy policies and programmes.
- Distinct changes and perception on why it is important to integrate gender and energy.
- Behavioural change in institutions on need to raise awareness and change practice.
TIE-ENERGIA has been pioneering in laying the groundwork for mainstreaming energy and gender, with a comprehensive capacity building initiative on gender and energy across Africa, both in terms of scope and practitioners targeted. For reports and more information >>
