ENERGIA News' Latest Issue Focuses on Gender and Productive Uses of Energy in Asia
This issue highlights experiences from Asia and pays special attention to the work being done by ENERGIA partners in the region. The articles show that [improved] access to modern energy can have a positive impact on women's income and their economic, social and even political empowerment. View >>
Project Proposal Submitted to Sida
The proposal "Strengthening Governance and Management in the Energy Sector through Gender Mainstreaming" was submitted to Sida in November. Highlights of the proposal are:
- a new strategy in which ENERGIA will embark upon the development and implementation of gender sensitive energy access projects for the poor.
- a strong component of national level policy influencing in member countries in Africa and Asia.
- increased support to the members in the 22 network countries, both as individuals and as organisations.
Monitoring and Evaluation for Energy and Development [M&EED] International Working Group Meeting
7-8 December 2006, Roskilde, Denmark
Wendy Annecke, on behalf of ENERGIA, participated at this meeting. Her report of the meeting shows that the group has almost completed the tasks it set itself, including the development of a 10-Step Guide to M&E of Energy Projects and also discussed the future of the group. More >>

Gender Tools for the Energy Sector - Field Testing in Asia
The training modules, developed by ENERGIA together with TSD, University of Twente, include gender analytical tools for gender aware energy policy formulation and use in energy project planning. These tools were developed with the help of Practical Action Kenya. In order to check if the tools are applicable in other contexts they have been field tested in Asia. The results will be available on the ENERGIA website early 2007 and also form the basis for an article in the journal "Gender and Development" in Spring 2007. View the tools >>
West Africa Francophone Gender and Energy Training of Trainers
21-25 August 2006, Dakar, Senegal
This workshop was organised by ENDA-TM Senegal and aimed at training trainers to understand key concepts of gender and energy and the use of gender tools in energy planning to enable them to train practitioners in their own countries. Outputs of the workshop and an action plan developed by the group will soon be available on the TIE ENERGIA website.
Gender Audit of Botswana Draft Energy Policy
The final version of a four-page flyer on the results of the Botswana gender audit of energy policy and practice is available in print. An electronic copy is also available here.
Gender Audit of Kenya Energy Policy and Practice
The gender audit of the energy policy and practice in Kenya has begun under the TIE ENERGIA project and is scheduled to finalise in March 2007. This has included a training of a five-member gender audit team in November 2006 on how to use the tools and methodologies needed to conduct the audit. The training was followed by an awareness raising workshop of key stakeholders to clarify the objectives of the audit. Check here for updates.
ENERGIA at CSD-15
Memorandum of Understanding with WEDO
Building upon the successful partnership at CSD-14 and as a means to coordinate inputs and harmonise efforts from representatives of the Women's Major Group into the CSD-15 process, WEDO and ENERGIA have signed an MoU. WEDO and ENERGIA have agreed to further promote and integrate a gender perspective into the discussions and concrete outcomes of CSD 15 on energy and development and climate change.
Women's Major Group Input to Secretary General Reports for CSD-15
As official organising partners for Women as a Major Group, WEDO and ENERGIA coordinated the submission of the Inputs to the Secretary General Reports for CSD-15. This would not have been possible without the inputs provided by the members of the Group, whom we thank for their cooperation and insight. The inputs were submitted in August 2006. View >>
Priorities for Action Identified by Women's Major Group
Women as a Major Group have identified at least seven priorities for action, which were shared with the CSD Secretary General in November 2006. The list of priorities is available here on pages 6-8.
ENERGIA's Preparations for CSD-15
ENERGIA is pleased to announce that all CSD national workshops and reports at national level will be finalised by the end of 2006. During 2006, ENERGIA network members have prepared 15 national workshops on the topic of Gender, Energy and the MDGs, as a means to boost discussions at national level and increase awareness of the existing links between sustainable development and the energy needs of women. Also, 19 national reports showcasing the different countries and their policy framework in relation to gender and energy have been produced, as well as 4 regional reports (Africa, Asia, Pacific, Latin America). ENERGIA is engaged in efforts to publish these reports. View >>
