Review, Analysis & Assessment of Research Relating to Gender and Climate Change
The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) has agreed to fund a small study that aims to review, analyse and assess existing research relating to gender and climate change. genanet / LIFE e.V., based in Berlin, Germany, is carrying out the study from August 2006 until April 2007.

Funding for ENERGIA Phase 4
We announce with great pleasure that ENERGIA's funding proposal submitted to the Dutch Directorate General for Development Cooperation has been approved. In line with the requirements, ENERGIA's proposal was presented under the umbrella of the ETC Foundation. The funding is for a four-year period from 2007 to 2010.
In addition, ENERGIA has submitted a proposal to the EU Energy Facility. This proposal includes activities to further strengthen the gender and energy network and build on the experiences of the TIE-ENERGIA project being implemented in Africa. The process of approving proposals and awarding contracts will take until the end of 2006.

The ENERGIA International Secretariat was pleased to host María Morales, ENERGIA's contact person at Sida, on October 9th and 10th 2006. It was a very opportune moment to debrief her on ENERGIA's activities in the final year of Phase 3 and to discuss plans and strategies for taking the network further in Phase 4.

ENERGIA Participation at WREC IX
ENERGIA actively participated at the Gender & Energy Track at the World Renewable Energy Congress (WREC) IX, with several of its members presenting papers and serving on discussion panels. More >>

International Conference on Solar Cooking
Ganesh Ram Shrestha of CRT Nepal participated in the International Conference on Solar Cooking and Food Processing held in Granada, Spain, from 11th to 16th July 2006. He presented a paper on "Promotion of Solar Cookers for Eco-tourism Development in Nepal" which was well received. As an outcome of the conference, he has been nominated for a place on the Steering Committee of Solar Cookers International (SCI) based in USA.

Biogas and Sanitation Initiative for Africa
May Sengendo, of the ENERGIA Regional Network for Africa, was invited by the Dutch Directorate for Development Cooperation to participate in an explorative workshop on market development for biogas in Africa. The organisers recognised May's knowledge and experience in gender and energy issues in Africa and were convinced that her input would add value to the discussions.

Network News

One-off Activities in Asia
ENERGIA invited those Asian National Focal Points (NFPs) who had not yet applied for seed funding to submit proposals for one-off events/activities within a budget of €1500. Under this initiative, Prokaushali Sangsad Limited, the NFP for Bangladesh was supported to undertake a knowledge-sharing event and a capacity-building workshop on gender and energy. The events took place early November 2006.

Regional Network Meetings
As ENERGIA embarks upon Phase 4 of its activities in January 2007, meetings of the Asian and African National Focal Points are being organised. The Asian meeting was held from 1-3 November, while the African meeting will take place from 29 November to 1 December.

South Africa Network Update
The South African Gender and Energy Network (SAGEN) has undertaken several activities, including a gender audit of women in the energy sector, publishing a chapter on a gendered history of electrification and service delivery in South Africa, and participating at a one-day symposium. More >>

Ghana Network Update
The Gender and Energy Network in Ghana was invited to the launch of the Energy for Poverty Reduction Action Plan (EPRAP) and is collaborating with the Kumasi Institute of Technology -which has played a key role in developing the EPRAP- to develop the capacity of the Institute's staff, particularly for gender-disaggregated data collection. The Gender and Energy Network of Lesotho (GENOL) has been using events that target a cross-section of the population as platforms for disseminating gender and energy issues. More >>

AIWC Dissemination Workshop
The All India Women's Conference (AIWC) conducted a dissemination workshop on Gender and Energy at Maneser, Gurgoan on 25th June 2006. Around 80 women from all over India participated in the workshop.

Training by the Gender and Energy Network in Ghana
The Gender and Energy Network in Ghana has recently embarked on the development of training programmes to encourage women to venture into male-dominated fields of work. So far, 80 women have graduated from training programmes in the area of metal machining, welding and fabrication, auto-body spraying, auto mechanics, still photography and auto-electrical work. Most of the women are working as apprentices to master craftsmen, and a few of them have started their own ventures.
