Empirical Review of Evidence on Gender/Energy and MDG Linkages

Linkages among energy, development and gender have been increasingly recognized as relevant in light of the Millennium Development Goals adopted in 2000 by world leaders at a United Nations summit, and the adoption of specific gender targets in the Platform for Action at the Fourth World Conference on the Status of Women in 1995 in Beijing. This is one of a series of research papers being published under an ENERGIA/DFID research project on "Gender as a key variable in energy". Case studies are being carried out in a number of countries collecting field data on linkages between gender and energy.

An empirical review of evidence from past studies on linkages between energy and poverty, from a gender perspective, is also part of the research. As part of the empirical review, papers are being prepared exploring the empirical and especially the quantitative evidence on the impact of energy access on each of the UN Millennium Development Goals.
