ENERGIA's Regional and National NetworksTo build strong Southern ownership of the network ENERGIA has supported the creation of two regional, Southern networks in Africa and Asia. The ENERGIA-Africa Network was established through a regional consultative process in 2000, while the ENERGIA-Asia Network was established in 2001, also through consultations. These regional ENERGIA networks exist as informal networks based on organisations working on energy and sustainable development issues, who all share agreed principles on gender, women's empowerment and sustainable development. The regional ENERGIA networks have developed into active and vibrant networks, working closely with the ENERGIA International Secretariat -responsible for overall management- and with each other. They are headed by a Regional Network Coordinator (RNC), located within, or liaising closely with a Regional Secretariat. The RNCs facilitate the process of needs assessment at the national and regional levels, and translate these into concrete network activities. They coordinate programme activities and engage with the NFPs and network members at the regional level. The Regional Secretariats have a supportive role to the regional network activities. Each regional network consists of a number national networks and in Africa these are organised in sub-regional chapters. These are managed and coordinated by focal point organisations within the respective sub-regions and countries. At this moment, ENERGIA has 4 sub-regional and 13 national networks in Africa and 9 national networks in Asia. Focal points play a key role in the ENERGIA network, being the communication points between grassroots members and the wider international ENERGIA network. They have a catalytic role in initiating gender and energy activities within their networks. To ensure they can fulfil this role, they are selected through a process of consultation at the national/sub-regional level. Only established organisations can be elected as focal points.
