Biofuels, Food Security and Rural Development

Given the dangerous climate impacts and national security risks of global dependence on fossil fuels, the development of biofuels holds promises of clean, home grown energy, new markets for farmers, and 'green' jobs for rural communities. Yet increased investments in large-scale production of biofuels are now being blamed for rising food prices, evictions and violations of the rights of small farmers, rural women and indigenous communities, and increased competition over land, forests, water and natural resources.

The Stockholm Environment Institute (SEI) invited ENERGIA to present a paper on gender and biofuels at their side event 'North-South-South Forum on Biofuels, Climate and Sustainable Development' at WIREC. MDG3 Fund: Investing in Equality
Concrete action is called for to achieve equality between women and men. As a result Dutch NGOs, companies and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs have decided to put their back into the fund: MDG3 Fund:Investing in Equality to contribute to the realisation of Millennium Development Goal 3.
The total budget of the fund is € 50 million, available for multi-year proposals. There will be one call for proposals. Applications are to be submitted from 15 March 2008 up to and including 14 May 2008. More >>
Call for applications: International Women Environmental Entrepreneurs Fair
To be held in conjunction with IUCN World Conservation Congress,
5-14 October 2008, Barcelona, Spain
IUCN will use the platform offered by the World Conservation Congress to organise the Fair. The Fair aims to: facilitate and strengthen women's enterprises that prodice environmentally friendly products or services; and showcase women's business activities that go beyond regional borders and contribute to environmental conservation and the alleviation of poverty.
