History of ENERGIAHow it started...ENERGIA was established in 1995 by an informal group of women involved in energy inputs to the Beijing Conference on Women. They thus responded to the inadequate recognition of gender issues as a legitimate area of concern in mainstream energy policy, practice, and advocacy at that time. ENERGIA Phase 1Phase 1 of the ENERGIA project started in July 1996 and ended in June 1999, including a topping-up phase. Support was provided by DGIS (the Netherlands Directorate General of International Cooperation). The project's immediate objective was to raise awareness of gender as a credible factor in sustainable energy development, through a network and the newsletter ENERGIA News. More on the objectives and outcomes of Phase 1… ENERGIA Phase 2Phase 2 started in July 1999, with core funding from DGIS and Sida (Swedish International Development Agency). It ran for three years to June 2002, and was extended budget-neutral until December 2002. Building on the awareness raised in the first phase, Phase 2 began to provide services to meet the increasing demands for assistance in integrating gender in energy programmes, policies and projects. These services included advocacy, research and case study development, capacity building, regionalisation, a resource centre, continuation of ENERGIA News, and formalisation of the network.
